As a public institution, we stand for reliability, transparency and independence. We are a major European player in environmental consulting, setting standards and developing methods. Our expertise smooths the way for the successful implementation of EU environmental standards.

As Austria's leading organisation of experts for all environmental issues, we have been successfully supporting EU candidate countries to set up structures in the environmental field since 1999. We are active in 21 countries in eastern, south-eastern Europe and in the Mediterranean region.

We mediate between cultures
We advise and support institutions of the European Union as well as new and future member states in building up environmental legislation and monitoring. Through our cooperation in numerous EU working groups, we are in touch with the latest developments and ensure a mutual exchange of knowledge.

History
The Umweltbundesamt was established by an act of law (the Environmental Control Act) in 1985. The core tasks of the Umweltbundesamt were revised three years later when the Environmental Control Act was amended. In 1999 the Umweltbundesamt received the legal status of a limited liability company. As such it is 100% owned by the Republic of Austria, which is represented by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management (“Life Ministry”).
