Vienna/Zagreb, 18 September 2017 – In the next one and a half years, the Croatian Agency for the Environment and Nature will be working intensively to develop its national environmental information system and adapt it to European standards. Experts of the Environment Agency Austria and the Italian Ministry of the Environment and Protection of Land and Sea will assist them with their know-how. The collaboration started with a kick-off event in Zagreb on 15 September, which was attended by high-ranking representatives from national and international institutions, including the state secretary at the Croatian Ministry of Environment and Energy, Mile Horvat, the Italian ambassador to Croatia, Adriano Chiodi Cianfarani, and the Austrian project leader Violeta Philippitsch.

The aim of the collaboration is to improve monitoring of chemicals and hazardous substances and the implementation of European standards. The focus will be on the safety of industrial installations and accident prevention according to the Seveso Directive. Existing databases will be updated, blended with geographic data and moved to the national environmental information system. Improved documentation will facilitate reporting to the European Union, while new geographic applications will make better use of the data. There will be seminars and workshops to provide training for the national authorities in data processing, analysis and reporting. The project will be led by the Italian Ministry of the Environment and Protection of Land and Sea.
