Vienna, 21 February 2018 – In the next 18 months, the Umweltbundesamt (Environment Agency Austria) will be actively involved in a Twinning project in Jordan, preparing for a trade agreement between the European Union and Jordan. Twinning projects support European Neighbourhood Policy countries and new and future EU Member States in administrative capacity building and in the alignment of national legislation with EU standards. At the heart of the Jordan project is the conformity assessment and acceptance of industrial products. The task of the Environment Agency Austria is to support the Jordan Standards and Metrology Organisation in the implementation of European standards for the testing of products for prohibited or restricted chemicals. In the future, electrical equipment, toys and gas appliances are to be tested for harmful substances using European test methods.

Experts from the Environment Agency Austria will train analytics experts from Jordan in analytical methods to detect harmful substances in products, and support them in the validation and preparation of test regulations so that the new methods can be included in the scope of accreditation. The Environment Agency Austria and the Swedish Board for Accreditation and Conformity Assessment (SWEDAC) are involved in the project as junior partners. The project is led by the German Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, and it is funded through the European Neighbourhood Instrument (ENI).
