Whether in water or sediment, in the air, vegetation samples or fuel, in consumer goods and products or human blood: we analyze pollutants in the most diverse mediums. The range of tests we provide includes inorganic trace and species analysis as well as a wide range of organic pollutant analyses and the detection of genetically modified organisms.
In our accredited testing laboratory we also test materials, products and consumer goods for the compliance with limit values laid down in a number of legal provisions.
Our inorganic analysis capabilities cover metal analysis from mid range to low-level detection, including metal species such as Me-Hg or Cr VI. For the assessment of ambient air quality, ion-chromatographical and electrochemical methods are applied. RFA and ICP screenings allow rapid analyses of various environmental media and products.
Constant innovation combined with extensive experience from long-term monitoring programs characterizes our organic analytical testing capabilities. The media range from air and aqueous samples to sewage sludge and consumables. Over 1.200 organic substances can be detected.
The main task of our molecular biological laboratory is the analysis of feed, foodstuffs and environmental samples for the presence of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Qualitative and quantitative PCR-tests with state-of-the-art equipment are provided for our clients.
Conceptual Laboratory Services
Development of methods for and with our customers and the communication of know-how in the form of consulting and training form a major part of the services we provide. We organize inter-laboratory comparison for selected parameters.
The Umweltbundesamt Proficiency Testing Scheme is a helpful instrument of external quality assurance in analysis of water, air, waste and products.
National Reference Laboraory
According to Regulation (EC) No 882/2004, Umweltbundesamt was designated as national reference laboratory for dioxins and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in live animals and animal products according to Directive 96/23/EC and in feed and food as well as for genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
The Calibration Laboratory for Air Quality is the Austrian reference laboratory according to the EC Air Quality Directive since 2000 and therefore responsible for the traceability of air quality monitoring in Austria. In August 2009 the Calibration Laboratory was accredited for the concentration of the amount of substance of ozone in purified air in the range of 0 – 450 nmol/mol and was registered with the ÖKD number 30. In January 2012 the Calibration Laboratory was also accredited for the concentration of the amount of substances of nitrogen monoxide in purified air (0-1000 nmol/mol), sulfur dioxide in purified air (0-400 nmol/mol) and carbon monoxide in purified air (0-100 µmol/mol), in October 2013 for the calibration of volume flow in purified air and N2 (2-5000 ml/min).
National Etalons for Air Pollutants
In September 2009 the Austrian Federal Office of Metrology and Surveying (Bundesamt für Eich- und Vermessungswesen) designated the accredited Calibration Laboratory for Air Quality for the maintenance of the national standard for ozone in purified air. This designation was expanded in April 2013 for the national standards for nitrogen monoxide (NO), sulfur dioxide (SO2) and carbon monoxide (CO). By this designation these standards held by Umweltbundesamt are established as national etalons according to the “Maß- und Eichgesetz” (Metrology Act) with international recognition.
