GMO tests at the Umweltbundesamt

© Umweltbundesamt

The main task of our molecular biological laboratory is the analysis of feed, foodstuffs and environmental samples for the presence of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Qualitative and quantitative PCR-tests with state-of-the-art equipment are provided for our clients.

In our accredited laboratory we test for GMOs in:

  • Bread and Bakery
  • Fruits
  • Vegetables
  • Rice
  • Baby food
  • Sweets and Desserts
  • Feedstuffs for animals

According to  the requests from our customers we answer a variety of different questions:

Does a sample contain GMOs?

Answers are provided from screening the sample for a list of GMOs comprising most of the GMOs that are marketed worldwide.

What kind GMOs are contained in a sample?

Individual GMOs are detected in a specific manner. The range of GMOs we can detect is adapted to cover any GMOs that are new on the market.

What amount of a GMO does a sample contain?

In a quantitative analysis we determine the percentage of GMO-DNA in relation to the overall DNA of a specific ingredient. For example we determine the proportion of GMO-Soy in the overall Soy-content of a product.

Quality control is a prior concern in providing reliable test systems

The laboratories of Umweltbundesamt operate according to the rules of the ISO 17025 Quality Control system: this standard is only to be achieved with strict internal quality control measures and through participation in an international network of laboratories subject to a common external quality control regime. We use international validated methods for all our tests. Members of our lab team are certified experts for GMO-testing according to §50 of the Austrian Food regulation.

ENGL-Membership

The European Network of GMO Laboratories (ENGL) was established in 2002 and comprises more than 70 member laboratories of the European Union, Norway and Switzerland. The scope is to create a platform for experts involved in sampling, detection, identification and quantification of GMOs. The GMO Lab of the Umweltbundesamt together with other reference laboratories from various Member States is assisting the Community Reference Laboratory (CRL) of the European Commission, which is responsible the development of standardised testing protocols for use throughout the EU.

Experts of our GMO lab are assisting the further development of the ENGL network as steering committee members.
