Clean air is vital for human beings as well as for animals and plants. Pollutants that are released by various human activities can be harmful to our health and our environment.
Numerous abatement measures during the last few years have led to - sometimes substantial - decreases in the levels of various pollutants in Austria and Europe.
However, as the widespread exceedances of ozone threshold levels in the summer of 2003 showed, further efforts are still necessary. Besides, the elevated levels of particulate matter recorded during the winter months constitute a threat to our health. Only ambitious abatement measures will solve this problem.
Network of regional background sites
Monitoring sites of the Umweltbundesamt make up the Austrian monitoring network of regional background sites.
Up-to-date information
The Umweltbundesamt provides a daily report of maximum pollutant levels in Austria.
Air pollution and greenhouse gases
Transport is one of the main causes. Exhaust gases contain a large number of pollutants and greenhouse gases.
