Water management and water protection in Austria

Austria’s landscape and climatic heterogeneity is reflected in its water regime and aquatic ecology.

The mean total annual precipitation is 1170mm, but values range from under 500mm in low-lying regions in northeastern Austria to 2500mm or more per year in high altitudes in the Northern Alps.

Key Objectives

The key objectives of water management and water protection in Austria are to provide for water quality according to high-level standards, to ensure the water supply of the Austrian population, to protect or restore the ecological integrity of water ecosystems and to guarantee protection from adverse effects caused by water.

Umweltbundesamt is actively involved in these topics at the national and international levels in the fields of surface waters and groundwater.

From the international perspective, Austria is rich in water resources. The annual volume of usable water (84 billion m³) is an amount sufficient to cover the nation’s entire surface area to a depth of ca. 1m.

Monitoring in Austria - a long tradition
In 2006 the Austrian river and groundwater monitoring networks have been operational for 15 years.
Twinning with Estonia
The project for the implementation of the EU bathing water directive was successfully finished with the bathing season 2009.
Special protection of a valuable resource
as almost all of Austria's drinking water supply is abstracted from groundwater.
