Vienna, 25 April 2016 - From 18 to 20 April, the Environment Agency Austria organised, on behalf of Eurostat (the European Union’s Statistical Office), a training course on European Water Statistics in Vienna. 21 participants from 15 countries took advantage of this opportunity offered by the Umweltbundesamt (Environment Agency Austria) and its partners, the Sogeti IT provider and the French Office International de l'Eau. The participants informed themselves about what data to collect in their countries, and how they should transmit information on water resources, uses and wastewater to Eurostat. Differences and similarities in the approaches to data provision became apparent during an exchange of experiences. Apart from providing the theory, along with an opportunity for knowledge transfer, the course also gave the participants the opportunity to visit Vienna’s main wastewater treatment plant and the Ardo food manufacturer.

In dialogue with experts from the southern Mediterranean countries it was discussed how the European Union can support countries in areas of the European Neighbourhood Policy (Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestine/Palestinian territories, Syria, Tunisia) in water management.
