Vienna, 2 July 2018 – The Umweltbundesamt, the Environment Agency Austria, is one of the leading advisors on the development and preparation of greenhouse gas inventories in Europe. After delivering training courses in Singapore, Ghana and the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Austrian experts are now sharing their know-how for the first time with South Korea.

The Environment Agency Austria has been invited by the Korean Greenhouse Gas Inventory & Research Centre of Korea (GIR) and der UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to organise a three-day workshop in Seoul on greenhouse gas inventories for the energy sector.

The focus is on the preparation of greenhouse gas inventories, data verification and on reporting in accordance with the Paris Climate Agreements for developing countries (non-Annex I countries). The workshop is taking place as part of a training course which will last several weeks, starting at the end of June, and which will be hosted by the Korean Environment Ministry in cooperation with the Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, UNFCCC, and financed by Korea. The participants come from 30 different countries ranging from Albania, Myanmar, Paraguay and the Solomon islands to Uganda.

Greenhouse gas inventories are a prerequisite for active climate and air quality policy. In order to prepare them, trends and causes of greenhouse gas and air pollutant emissions are analysed. The results provide the basis for efficient climate and air quality measures and for monitoring their implementation.

At its Training Centre for emission inventories, the Environment Agency Austria offers tailored support for the preparation and improvement of national and regional greenhouse gas and air emissions inventories. In seminars and workshops experts offer their assistance in the development, monitoring and evaluation of emission reduction measures, for reporting and for the development of emission scenarios.

As Austria's environmental expert institution, the Environment Agency Austria can draw on its expertise in the preparation of the Austrian greenhouse gas inventory and the aggregation of European inventories. The Environment Agency Austria has extensive experience of international capacity building projects and works as advisor to the European Union and the European Parliament.
