Vienna / Zagreb, 22 March 2019 – On Friday 22 March 2019, the closing ceremony officially marked the end of the Twinning project 'Chemicals and hazardous substances monitoring improvement and integration of Seveso database into Croatian Environmental Information System as the unique Central Seveso Information System'. Experts from Italy and Austria co-ordinated by the Ministry of Environment and Protection of Land and Sea with Minoprio Foundation, Italy, and supported by the Umweltbundesamt (Environment Agency Austria) provided the Ministry of Environment and Energy with their expertise and support in this project.

Achieved results

The overall objective of the project was to strengthen the capabilities and efficiency of the Republic of Croatia in the field of environmental protection and mitigation of climate changes by improving management, monitoring and more precise reporting on chemicals, emissions, hazardous substances and accidents as well as to upgrade and integrate the current Seveso databases with Geographic Information System within Croatian Environmental Information System. Therefore the current database was upgraded to one unique database with all necessary information and data adequate for quick responding and prevention of major accidents.

At the same time, capacities of all involved competent authorities and other stakeholders were improved through workshops and seminars implemented by this project. Stronger capacities led to better knowledge in collecting, maintaining and validating of data which results in better quality of data, more precise monitoring and a general higher awareness and preparedness of the operators and of the concerned population.
