Since the 1960s, European brown hare (Lepus europaeus) populations in various European countries including Austria and Germany have experienced a severe decline.

Habitat loss and intensive agriculture are taking their toll on the wild animal. A new pilot study by the Environment Agency Austria, the Institute of Forensic Medicine (GMI) at the Medical University of Innsbruck and the Research Institute of Wildlife Science and Ecology at Vetmeduni Vienna (FIWI) is the first to investigate exposure to environmental pollutants as another factor in the declining population.
