They are taking part in a workshop, organized in cooperation with TAIEX (Technical Assistance and Information Exchange Instrument) and under the EU Environment Partnership Programme for Accession (EPPA). The aim of the workshop is to increase knowledge of European requirements for the reduction of national air emissions and to share information on the implementation of the EU acquis in the Western Balkans and Turkey. The Umweltbundesamt (the Environment Agency Austria) participates as a partner in the project and, among other tasks, leads the component on air quality related EU directives. The Environment Agency Austria has been supporting institutional capacity building in the countries of the Western Balkans for many years and is taking an active role in building institutional capacities in the partner countries.

Strategic advice and support by experienced partners

The workshop in Vienna focuses on topics such as the preparation of national air pollution control programmes, emission inventories and projections, and monitoring of air pollution impacts. Environmental cooperation with the Western Balkans and Turkey is part of the EU Environment Partnership Programme for Accession (EPPA). EPPA offers a collaboration platform for EU candidate and potential candidate countries to better deal with EU environmental acquis implementation challenges, by fostering regional dialogue and further developing networks with the EU Member States. Austrian experts under the leadership of NIRAS assist the partner countries with their knowledge and experience in building administrative capacity, developing air quality management programmes and waste management plans, and in protecting the marine and coastal environment.
