On World Clean Up day, on 18 September 2021, streets, parks, forests, rivers, canals, banks and squares around the world will be freed from litter. Austria also participates in the cleanup event and sets an example for a clean and healthy environment. Austria's knowledge and experience in managing waste are in high demand internationally. As one of the leading environmental consultants in Europe, the Environment Agency Austria (Umweltbundesamt) shares this know-how far beyond the borders of the EU, for example with Jordan.

Focus on municipal waste

Since 2020, a new tool for the electronic data management of waste data is in use in Jordan, which was developed and implemented by the Jordanian authorities and stakeholders with support of the Environment Agency Austria. The tool simplifies reporting and notifications to regulatory authorities and makes air quality monitoring in the proximity of landfills easier. In addition, a mobile air quality laboratory has been procured, which the authorities can use for this purpose. "The Environment Agency Austria has supported the Jordanian authorities several times in recent years in building up administration and national legislation in the environmental sector," explains Managing Director Georg Rebernig. "With the waste project, Jordan has once again shown its clear commitment to the implementation of European environmental standards. The project was financed by funds provided by the European Neighbourhood Instrument (ENI).
