Short description

Increasing climate change implications have made Uzbekistan highly exposed to water related risks, such as floods, mudflows and droughts. The ageing of water management infrastructure and the growing number of farmers have made water distribution a growing challenge. Soil salinization and water logging have impacted water quality of rivers and have caused environmental degradation.

The objective of this EU programme is to contribute to sustainable and inclusive and to to improve the water supply and the efficiency of water resources management at national, basin and farm level.

Services provided

  • Introducing strategic environmental assessment in two pilot regions, developing and strengthening water basin management plans
  • Developing tools to improve access to and exchange of water related data between different agencies, units and users, developing a water cadastre of the Republic of Uzbekistan
  • Revising good practices of legal and technical aspects with regard to groundwater management and recommendations for Uzbekistan
  • Providing legal support to align to the EU Water Framework Directive and other international standards
