From 28 to 31 of January 2019 a delegation of Tunisian experts from the Ministry of Industry, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Observatory on Environment and Sustainable Development and the Agency for Waste Management is visiting the Umweltbundesamt, the Environment Agency Austria, in Vienna to learn more about the national Pollutant Release and Transfer Register. During this 4-day visit Austrian and Tunisian experts exchange experience in the field of PRTR implementation (institutional set up, legal basis and technical implementation), develop a set of recommendations for PRTR implementation in Tunisia and visit selected industrial sites. The study visit takes place in the framework of the EU-funded European Neighbourhood Instrument SEIS (Shared Environmental Information System) II South support mechanism.

Improving the availability of reliable environmental data by strengthening environmental monitoring and information management is needed for environmental policy-making. For tracking and monitoring sources of pollution a PRTR has been proven to be an efficient tool. PRTR Programme was introduced in the Mediterranean region in the form of pilot projects to be implemented in selected industrial areas. Recently Tunisia received a financial support to conduct a PRTR pilot project.
