Finalist the EU Award REGIOSTARS 2023

The Danube Cycle Plans project has been selected as a finalist for the REGIOSTARS 2023 award in the category “’A connected Europe”.

About Danube Cycle Plans

Between 2020 and 2022, the Environment Agency Austria, together with representatives from ministries and project partners from eight other countries in the Danube region, led a project to improve the cycling route along the Danube. A strategy was developed to improve cycling infrastructure, embed cycling in the region's transport mix and establish cycling as an environmentally friendly and health-promoting mobility alternative. The two-and-a-half-year project made an important contribution to improving cycling conditions in the Danube Region.

Organisations and experts in the fields of transport and environment from Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia and Bulgaria were involved.

Results of the project

A number of measures were implemented during the two and a half years of the project:

  • The first-ever Danube Cycling Strategy
  • 5 new and 4 updated National Cycling Plans
  • The establishment of a common Danube Cycle Route Network, "DanuVelo"
  • Creation of 9 National Cycle Route Networks
  •  Formation of 9 National Cycling Working Groups (one in each country)
  •  Mentoring sessions facilitating knowledge exchange
  • Organization of 5 new National Cycling Conferences
  • Appointment of Danube Cycling Ambassadors
  • Hosting of events in each country

Voting was possible until November 14, 2023.
