Short description

CloudEffeciency is a project carried out by Umweltbundesamt – the Environment Agency Austria in cooperation with the German Borderstep Institute. It focused on the energy consumption of cloud computing services in the European Union and analyzed potentials to make them more energy-sufficient. As digitalization drives power consumption to all-time highs, policymakers are ought to think about solutions. According to the study, this could either be achieved through higher energy-efficiencies in cloud computing or lower demands by data centers. In that regard, Green Public Procurement and market policies were the main targets. Furthermore, a basis for promoting sustainable development in the areas of green IT infrastructure was promoted and was published by the European Commission in November 2020.

Services Provided:

•          Preparation of a review of current approaches to eco-friendly procurement, use and provisioning of digital technologies

•          Gap analysis based on a comprehensive quantitative analysis of the energy consumption of cloud-based services, the potentials in technology development, Research & Development (R&D) and the goals of the European Commission (EC) for energy efficiency

•          Analysis of the current National Action Plans (NAP) in relation to the prioritized EU GPP criteria and tools related to cloud computing; formulation of conclusions and policy recommendations

•          Recommendations on policy options for cloud services
