In "Austria's Annual Greenhouse Gas Inventory 1990–2011" the Umweltbundesamt presents updated figures of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Austria. In 2011, the fourth year of the first commitment period under the Kyoto Protocol, GHG emissions amounted to 82.8 million tonnes of CO2 equivalents. This corresponds to a 6.0% increase against the base-year level and to a 2.6% decrease compared to 2010. The key driver for the decrease from 2010 to 2011 was the decreasing consumption of fossil fuels due to mild temperatures and the high crude oil price.
Content and format of this report are in accordance with the obligations under the greenhouse gas monitoring mechanism 280/2004/EC for implementing the Kyoto Protocol. Updated emission data have to be reported yearly to the European Commission by 15 January at the latest.
