Tire wear is a growing source of microplastics and releases large quantities of them in Europe; it also releases toxic chemicals such as 6PPD into the environment. Since tire wear is technically almost impossible to prevent, a comprehensive strategy is needed at the European level. An expert project evaluated numerous measures and demonstrated that a mix of short-term and long-term solutions is necessary. The proposed strategy covers six areas, including reducing wear at the source, safer chemicals, better risk assessment, as well as traffic reduction and new technologies. Key approaches include stricter wear limits, more sustainable tires, increased research, and additional measures such as street cleaning or reduced car traffic.
